Teaching
Philosophy

  • My teaching philosophy draws on the meaning of the root of a word, EDUCATION. In Latin, the word "education" is rooted in educare and educere, which means bringing out the potential of individuals. Based on this origin of the word, my teaching focuses on trusting in students' own potential and providing appropriate support as a facilitator so that students can grow as an active agent who constructs knowledge and applies it to their own lives.

  • I also value translating theories into practice when I teach students. This leads me to provide my students with as many opportunities as possible, in which they share their own critical thinking about how specific learning theories can be applied to their own learning, design their own lesson plans as a pre-service teacher, and write reflection papers about how learning and motivation theories can inform educational practices.

Teaching
Experience: College Level

  • TE150 Reflections on Learning, Department of Teacher Education, College of Education, Michigan State University

  • Role: Independent Instructor

  • FS 2022 - FS 2024; FS 2019 - SS 2021

  • Course Overview: This course provides an overview of learning perspectives, brain and cognitive development, and motivation theories. Throughout the semester, students are given opportunities to apply various theories to their own real-life learning contexts through a variety of types of assignments such as writing reflection journals, creating lesson plans, conducting an interview, and developing their own teaching/learning philosophy.

Students' Anonymous Qualitative Feedback on Taking TE150 Course

"Very much enjoyed the course. Assignments encouraged deeper thinking and application and were graded very fairly. Ms. Kim was very nice and kind, very understanding of the students' needs especially during the pandemic. Really enjoyed Ms. Kim and would definitely take another course taught by her again!"

"She was really nice and I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from her. Coming to a big university, I didn't expect to have a teacher like Ms. Kim. She was able to connect with her students individually and was helpful. She was super sweet and did what she could to help her students. Her students were always her top priority."

FS 2020

"I really enjoyed this class with the instructor. She went above and beyond to make sure that my classmates and I knew what was going on and what was expected in class at all times. I learned so much in this class, and I really appreciate all of the hard work she put into this class. Thank you for all the helpful lessons! I hope to be as great of an educator as you one day."
